Stem Radial Growth Is Negatively Related to Tree Defoliation and Damage in Conifers, Northern Italy

چکیده

Although several manipulative experiments provided evidence for a negative effect of defoliation on tree growth, results from observational studies were less univocal. This may be due to the ability observed reflect health status individual trees, influence site condition and amplitude time window used growth assessment. Here, we investigated relationship between two indicators (crown defoliation, damage symptoms) annual (measured by tree-ring width 69 Norway spruce trees) periodical (5-year 10-year diameter increments, 346 trees five coniferous species) growth. Data originated 14 (seven rings) ICP Forests Level I plots in Trentino, northern Italy. Diameter, measured 1997 2011 as part crown survey, while cores tree-rings collected sub-sample 2012. We carried out regression modeling combined with model selection one-step (periodical data) two-step (annual approaches, using moving averages data varying widths. Our indicated an overall correlation or stem The changes relation considered, becomes stronger when are aggregated over longer windows (>3 years), also occurrence symptoms plays significant role. aggregation is probably mechanisms behind defoliation-growth relationship, which change according causal factors involved. In particular, larger short-term fluctuations likely smoothed out, more general patterns emerge. concluded that radial significantly negatively related this supports use rapid indicator forest vitality.

Capturing spiral radial growth of conifers using the superellipse to model tree-ring geometric shape

Tree-rings are often assumed to approximate a circular shape when estimating forest productivity and carbon dynamics. However, tree rings are rarely, if ever, circular, thereby possibly resulting in under- or over-estimation in forest productivity and carbon sequestration. Given the crucial role played by tree ring data in assessing forest productivity and carbon storage within a context of glo...

Effects of Invasive Winter Moth Defoliation on Tree Radial Growth in Eastern Massachusetts, USA

Winter moth, Operophtera brumata L. (Lepidoptera: Geometridae), has been defoliating hardwood trees in eastern Massachusetts since the 1990s. Native to Europe, winter moth has also been detected in Rhode Island, Connecticut, eastern Long Island (NY), New Hampshire, and Maine. Individual tree impacts of winter moth defoliation in New England are currently unknown. Using dendroecological techniqu...

Cone size is related to branching architecture in conifers.

The relationship between branch diameter and leaf size has been widely used to understand how vegetative resources are allocated in plants. Branching architecture influences reproductive allocation as well, but fewer studies have explored this relationship at broad phylogenetic or ecological scales. In this study, we tested whether pollen-producing and seed-producing cone size scales with branc...

A mathematical model linking tree sap flow dynamics to daily stem diameter fluctuations and radial stem growth.

To date, models for simulating sap flow dynamics in individual trees with a direct link to stem diameter variation include only the diameter fluctuation driven by a change in stem water storage. This paper reports results obtained with a comprehensive flow and storage model using whole-tree leaf transpiration as the only input variable. The model includes radial stem growth based on Lockhart's ...
